Dear friends,
We are happy to announce that since December 2019 we are PhD students at the University of Antwerp with the topic “The four traditions of mandolin music in Greece”.

The cultural presence of the mandolin in Greece is linked to four different musical traditions coming from four regions: Asia Minor, the Ionian Islands, Athens, and Crete. However, since the music has traditionally been passed on from generation to generation by means of oral transmission, and since traditional musicians are now in old age, all this heritage is about to be lost.
Τhrough our research, we aim to cover a serious gap in academic and artistic knowledge with regard to the history, repertoire and playing techniques of the mandolin in general, and of modern Greek music in particular.
We are willing to focus as much as possible on our research, and though we wish to be able to travel to aforementioned regions and collect as much data as possible (scores, recordings, information, etc), we do not have the necessary funds.

And so we are inviting you to support us by coming to our fundraising concert that is to be held on March 15 at 15:00. In this concert, we shall be able to show you just how much our passion for music is and just how much we would appreciate any help you would be able to give us in our endeavours.
Your support will mean the world to us. We ask that you support us through donating, however, much you can. Any and all donations shall be greatly appreciated.
We will be delighted to see you in our exquisite concert where, together, we will travel through the sounds and aromas of Greece. The music, the song will travel us to the authenticity of that age and will offer us a beautiful atmosphere!

Mandolin’s reis naar Griekenland
Saturday 7 December 2019 at 20:00
Sint Joriskerk: Mechelseplein 24, 2000 Antwepen
Historical Frame
The mandolin as a musical instrument expressing the local music tradition appears in Greece at the end of the 19th century and is connected to four different traditions. Asia Minor, Athens, Ionian Islands and Crete. Greece has traditionally been a crossroads of cultures and peoples because of its geographical location. Moreover, the fact that Greece is a country which was under the domination of other forces (Italian, French, English, Ottoman, Germany) for over four centuries, resulted in two-sided cultural osmosis which has led to many kinds of influences and integrations that have also happened in music. Therefore, the repertoire of mandolin, on the one hand, is characterised by an impressive diversity of rhythms, harmony and melody due to the creative assimilation of both the Eastern sounds and Western European sounds and on the other hand, it differs from tradition to tradition. However, since the music was passed from generation to generation by oral transmission and since traditional musicians are old, there is too little documentation of the performance practice.

Concept
In a musical performance, are presented four different traditions, four different cultures of the mandolin in Greece. The idea of the project originated from the postgraduate thesis “Four Mandolin Traditions in Greece” by Maria and Elina Markatatou who are currently researching further the aforementioned topic as doctorate students at the University of Antwerp. In a current period, aback in time journey, which shows elements of European identity and the Greek cultural heritage. Great musicians from Greece and Spain add more to the existing tradition and with their talent give an excellent performance for the audience.

ELINA & MARIA MARKATATOU
@ THE CLASSICS
Tuesday 20 Augustus 2019, at 20 h
Minkelersstraat 2 – Zomerfabriek

Musical and theatrical performance
” The four traditions of the mandolin in Greece”
Sunday 24 March at 19:00
Vasilko Odessa Academic Ukrainian Music and Drama Theater , Odessa Ukraine
Organising by the Hellenic Foundation for Culture

The performance is aimed to present the Greek cultural heritage and traditions from four different regions of Greece in order to show and preserve musical traditions as well as introduce a new idea of musical heritage performed by young talented musicians with different temperaments and cultural identities.

In Greece, the use of mandolins to express local musical traditions dates back to the end of the XIX century and is associated with four regions: Asia Minor, Athens, the Ionian Islands and Island of Crete. Due to its geographical position, Greece is traditionally a crossroads of cultures and peoples. Given the fact that Greece was a country that had been under the domination of other countries for more than four centuries, this led to a multilateral interpenetration of cultures. This can also be found in the musical diversity of the influences by different cultures, and the repertoire of mandolin music shows an impressive variety of rhythms, harmony and melodies due to the creative exploration of both Oriental and Western European tunes, on the one hand, and demonstrates some differences between the four traditions, on the other hand.

From Asian Minor to Athens and from the Ionian Islands to Crete, in taverns, on stage, in aristocratic homes, in under balconies cantatas, at weddings and celebrations, in every corner the sound of the mandolin is heard.
In a musical performance, four different traditions, four different cultures of the mandolin in Greece are presented in a story connected to life and human emotion.
The idea for the project originated from the postgraduate thesis “Four Mandolin Traditions in Greece” by Maria and Elina Markatatou who were granted a scholarship from the Antwerp Conservatory for their work, in order to expand and enrich their research with the ultimate goal to farther more analysis.
Great musicians from Greece, Spain and Belgium add more to the existing tradition and with their talent give an excellent performance for the audience.
We will be delighted to see you in our exquisite show where together we will travel to the sounds and aromas of Greece presenting the 4 traditions of the mandolin. The music, the dance, the theatre, the song and food will travel us to the authenticity of that age and present us with a beautiful atmosphere!
